Poultry Parts of Speech

Are you looking for a great Parts of Speech review and craftivity?!  These Poultry Parts of Speech turned out HILARIOUS!

My students loved making and reading the funny sentences!

Basically students create feathers for their "bird" in a _________ (adjective) _________ (adjective) _________ (noun)  ________ (verb) ___________ (prepositional phrase) format.

We put all of our feathers in different bags/groups then draw out a sentence.

Students have to cut and paste their "new" turkey together and draw the action from the sentence.  Here is how mine turned out.

Here are some that students created as well:

Hilarious, right?!

If you are interested in learning more details about this activity or how to get the printables - click on any of the pictures above.

It also comes with a fun Mad Lib like activity and a color the turkey by part of speech page that we do for homework right after doing this project!

Here's how they look up in our classroom:

Welcome to the Pet Gourmet and other Noun Restaurants!

So being in 4th grade, I quickly review parts of speech before getting into structure at the beginning of the year.  Obviously, nouns gets at most 2 days of instruction since we only have about 15 min anyway because this is stressed in the earlier grades.

We reviewed nouns and special nouns - common, proper, singular, plural, concrete, and abstract.  I handed out our noun chart to glue in our notebooks for easy reference and no need to take notes.

After checking for understanding multiple times, I saw that we could move on from nouns but I wanted a more final but fun assessment.

I thought of Noun Restaurants!  Students design a menu around a self selected or random theme (which can be crazy!)  They color code the nouns in their menu to match what the class selects.

These were so fun for my students!  I even got hugged and told, "thanks for making homework fun!" They loved a chance to be creative with such an open ended assignment.

Many chose their own theme but I did include some choices as well - only serves pets, no silverware, underwater, treehouse, etc.... to get their brains going or for some that wanted a challenge.  This really served the purposes of upper elementary the best!

The entrees, desserts, appetizers they came up with and worked so hard to fit with their theme really showcased their talent.  It was a perfect quick creative assessment especially for getting back in the routine of school.  We are studying verbs next - wait till you see what I have in store!

Grandparents Day Project Ideas 2015

First up if missed this post last year - here is are some great/HILARIOUS ideas to start off Grandparents Day this year.  Pic below is linked to what I did last year.

I'm changing it up some this year because of how much time we get with grandparents and I want to use it wisely.

First up, I created this Kindercraze inspired tree.  I was really proud of it and it was the inspiration for other creations we came up with for celebrating this year.  I literally just cut random black strips of bulletin board paper and then up with glue dots it went.  Those leaves - just circles - even this completely unartistic gal got it together!

Here is a closeup of the frames hanging from the tree.  We put pictures in so far just drawing then adding real pictures once grandparent's day happens!

Free frame from TPT (Creative Clips) and just added words

One of the activities will be completely the answers to these questions on Grandparent's day comparing then and now.  I'm excited to see the answers and the students already have some guesses, but we can't wait to get to them till next Friday.

I love that this will tie in with our curriculum!

They will be attaching to our big hallway tree outside when complete (fingers crossed)

FREE printable about "Thumb" body that comes with different numbers as well from Who Arted.  I love that I got to use stamp pads just something cutesy and I haven't done in awhile.  I plan to write letters and cover parts of a letter to grandparents on the back to give to them upon their arrival.

Can't forget this old favorite.  We used the Old Fart Booth (FREE) app again this year and made ourselves old! Which of course again was HILARIOUS! We stepped it up this year and I came up with showcasing them this way as a 50 year reunion for that class.

We also used the Grandparent Name Generator to give ourselves names as well - such a fun addition

There you have it!  Many activities to prepare yourselves for Grandparent's Day this year!  I hope you can use some of these in your classroom.

How do you connect with grandparents and make them feel special?

Descriptive Writing 4th Grade - October

We have finished our Personal Narrative pieces and had an amazing author celebration! For the next 6 weeks we will work on Descriptive Writing, ending in a culminating Haunted Halloween piece.

To start this unit off with bang - I found these fun ideas from 4th Grade Frolics! We, too, started off with the "Go away Big Green Monster" book and then went into the descriptive writing and trying to match notecards. ( I told ya...more monster goodness!)  The students loved this!! I didn't show pictures and they had to draw from my reading the book!

After our first complete unit, we reviewed the steps in the writing process, stressing the importance of each and how they effect the outcome of the writing.

Descriptive writing, I emphasized was all about the DETAILS! My students clearly made the connections when they had to do the monster exercise.

They drew for 10 min, wrote a description for 5, then had 5 min to draw what was on the notecard of a partner and see how closely they matched. I had to emphasize they couldn't get any clues! We wanted to really stress how details are important!

We took time to present them so we could discuss the level of detail if they were closely related or what they completely forgot and how it effected the outcome of the picture.  My students really picked up on this concept of detail!  They were the ones making all sorts of connections to what we would be writing next and how detail is vitally important, even though we only demonstrated it using one sense!

Here are some of our finished paired pieces:

forgot to mention color, but described shape well.

Another fun way to tie this in would be to use the Create a Monster Site from Disney. for FREE, you can create a monster instead of draw and you could also type a description instead of write.  If only I had found it in time for this year! The website is great and easy to save so it is very student friendly.

Here's a sample of one I created, how fun would that be to describe as well! Just another idea to add for next year!

4 Types of Sentences

I realized I hardly ever blog about grammar.  Hmmm...guess in reality its not my strongest point either but I had to share this idea we worked on the other week! I reviewed the 4 types of Sentences with my students in 4th grade and surprisingly these were new concepts for them.  We dove in and talked about the different types along with practice, practice, practice.  We focused on what punctuation would be important for each as well.

Besides introduction, modeling, and guided practice, I wanted a way that my students could show off their knowledge in a FUN way.  Fun and grammar in the same sentence....am I crazy? Well check out:

You want a fun quick assessment - this is it!  I love that it literally works for a variety of grades!

Here's the premise: "You lost your pet and need to created a Wanted Ad to post to get him back.  Use the 4 types of sentences in your ad and create an eye-catching picture to accompany your ad."

I let my students even use imaginary animals (after all...I was grading just their grammar)...so we had wanted ads for Unicorns, Robo-dogs, and some regular pets as well.  They had such a good time flexing their creative muscles while working on grammar.  I gave points for the 4 types of sentences and punctuation plus it made a great and engaging hallway display!

Classroom Reveal - Take a Peek inside

I'm so excited to do an official classroom reveal! Last year I was on a one year leave and didn't really get a chance to decorate my room, although I just moved 2 states away so it would have been difficult to do in that time (that is neither here nor there!) .... I'm just thrilled I got a blank slate to make my own this year.

If you have followed me on Instagram you might have seen some of my sneak peeks making their way to you:

Now let me preface this by saying, I have no "theme" in the general sense.  Black and brights is a color scheme and I have some great tech themed goodies that I'm so excited to share with my students this year but other than that... its just what I liked.

Let's take a look around:

Beyond my desk lies this shelf with my Teacher Toolbox and my Birthday sticks for students
The Class of Awesome sign was just like lacquer_teach_repeat made from instagram!

My door sign: "Teacher of AWESOME, Awesome means 4th Grade" inspired by this pin!

  • Objectives Board - right in the front of the room, easily accessible for everyone! I just slipped some colored paper into page protectors and added some labels! I did write our first objectives up there but they came out a little faint going to try a new marker before students arrive!
  • Welcome Sign- This will be on the Smartboard for meet the teacher / Open House night! I have them FREE here - for K- 6 !
  • Clip Chart - I made the chart before I fully decided to commit to using one this year - I plan on using Class Dojo but may need this or a variation for a few students....regardless I love the colorful clips (Sharpie...easy!) and the rainbow colors! I got it here FREE

  • Schedule - FREE here just switched up the font.
  • Bloom's Poster - printed from this pin here
  • Wonder Wall - I used Chalkboard Contact paper to create this on my white board.  The book "Ever Wonder Why?" was something my 5th grade teacher did each week, basically she had a place where the question was asked and we could guess the answer and we would go over it once a week.  It sparked such curiosity and was just a fun little thing...I'm excited to try it with my students this year.

Here's a tutorial if you want to make these rolled up paper decorations for your room!

Here's the job board which is split with our Genius Hour bulletin board and off to the side is a flip flop holder to hold task cards! I love how it takes up little room but still displays everything.  I got it for $5 at Walmart but you can find them multiple places.  The jobs are from my pack - here.

  • Below is my small group area - I'm didn't have this all last year and I'm unbelievably excited to have it this year!  I have some dry erase circles at each spot for review or beginning questions! (Ignore all the shelving in back...no cover for that yet..)
  • I got the soup can labels from Hope King during the BTS sale! For a first year decorating teacher - this was an easy buy, of course I have soup cans around so these will definitely get used!
  • My AR board for the year is magneted to a file cabinet near the back but I love all the bright colors!

Just a few whole room shots...last ones I promise!

From the door walking in!

View from back corner!

Stay tuned for what is on the student desk and what I have planned for Open House! I'd love to see your room - and gather ideas for next year (store them away, anyway).  Keeping the same room twice would make it easier to decorate right?!
