Portfolio Writing!

Being a young'un (in teacher standards) I've been working on my portfolio to take along to interviews!  This process had been harder than I thought it would be.  I feel Misty's pain at Think, Wonder, Teach!- There are really no resources or guides about how to create something that would be adequate but not too much to take to interviews for talking points.

We have a different portfolio for our end of student teaching with artifacts and rationales linked to every state standard.  Granted, those are very important but SO LONG and I don't think a principal would take time to read them all so I was looking for something semi-brief that would show off me!

I have found a couple great resources in some bloggers

Misty has a FANTASTIC post here which is how I want to modify mine  (but I'll show you my process now because it might be useful to someone hopefully).   Amy also has a GREAT post about her professional portfolio here!  Seriously go check these ladies out.....can't get enough resources!

After gathering everything I wanted in my portfolio, I wanted to organize it by sections that made sense and really showed me as a teacher.  I feel like its a work in process but this can be a great start!

This is the beginning page kind of like the table of contents which lists everything in each divider.  They are the color the divider for easier access.

Section 1: Professional Resources

  • resume
  • educational philosophy
  • publications
  • presentation (with pictures)
  • copies of certfications

Section 2: Before School Resources
  • Bulletin boards I've created
  • Classroom layout plans
  • welcome letter (ties in parent commuincation)
Sorry it is sideways but that's my welcome letter!

Section 3: First Day
  • My first day script (it was a class assignment buy boy will I be glad to have this!)
  • My whole first day plan with activities for the entire day in 30 min increments
Section 4: How my Classroom Runs (I feel like this part is huge- and can really make a difference in the classroom)
  • My management plan
  • Procedures
  • Rules, Rewards, and Consequences

Section 5: Showcase of my work

  • lesson plans (I tried to have something for each subject)
    • guided reading
    • math
    • science
    • social studies
  • unit plans
  • pictures of lessons or classroom

I wanted to make sure I had everything in case I get stuck in my interview or would have something to talk about!  What do you think?! I would love to have some feedback from educators since I'm so new!!!!!

I'm sure I will be adding more soon- like I said a work in progress........gotta start somewhere.  It serves my purposes for right now!

  1. Looks great! Just make sure you know where EVERYTHING is so that you can flip there quickly. Make sure your classroom management ideas are clear. They looked through mine thoroughly at my interview and I liked having something with me as an aide. I made a little info sheet for all of the interns at my school about portfolios/first year stuff if you want me to email it to you! =)

  2. First I want to say thanks for entering my 100 followers giveaway. Wow! This is a great post about your portfolio. I have sat on many interview committees, and your portfolio looks great. The unfortunate thing is that very rarely do we have time to even look at the extensive portfolios that you spent a "bizillion" (not a word but true)hours on and you gave your undivided attention to in hopes of landing a job. Try to have a small packet of information including your resume, letters of reference,
any awards, and an item or 2 that you think is noteworthy, package it professional, and have about 10 copies of it for every interview, to hand to the committee. One, it tells the committee you wanted everyone to have your information, not just the principal. If you don't get the job, someone on the committee may like what you gave them and pass your name on. Two, it gives the committee a quick reference to remember you. After interviewing 8 or 10 candidates in a row, you need to have notes on who was who. I can tell you, that teachers that do not interview a lot, can easily mix up one candidate with another. After a long day of teaching and then interviewing 8 candidates you need to stand out. You want to be remembered. Dress professionally, shake everyone's hand, make eye contact and relax. I worked in a very large sought after district but this could be true for any school. Good luck! Remember when the fit between you and the school is a good fit, you will get the job. You may not get a job that you interviewed for, but that just means the fit was not right. You are still a good candidate and a good teacher and the right job will come along. Sorry this is so long.

  3. I just stumbled across your post and your portfolio looks good! I graduated last year and totally changed my portfolio from the way my college had it. (too technical, schools wanted more "candid" stuff) It's now very similar to yours. Utilize pics extensively! :) Nothing tells it better than a picture. I'm back on the job hunt now (work as title 1 but really want my own classroom of kids) I'll pray for you if you pray for me!:) Also, new follower!

I do have one question though…what types of details do you include about your classroom management? It is the only area I am struggling on when it comes to knowing what to include.

my email is eschmeed@gmail.com if it is easier for you to respond to my question through email! Thanks!
