Magnet, Magnet, and more Magnets!

We have had so much fun learning about magnets recently.  In kindergarten, I begin by introducing magnets in a station and they just get to explore.  This makes our actual learning so much more engaging because they have gotten all the excitement out.  Although, they are still really cool!

Here are some pictures of us playing with our magnets:

We found things around our room that were magnetic- the pencil sharpener WAY COOL! We used bar magnets to help us.  What could be in the bag on the bottom right?

We are lucky enough to have plenty of magnet manipulatives and the ones on the top right are floating magnets - even I was amazed by those!

The iron fillings board was really cool and showed the magnetic fields really well! We loved experimenting with how much each type of magnet could hold.  We of course watched a brainpop movie on Magnets and learned more about what they are made of.

To accompany this unit I created this Mini Magnet book - perfect for elementary learners and easy to use!

This is perfect for any classroom! So fun and easy plus it extends our learning and leads to lots of questions! If you like these magnet products you can check out Magnet Stations or the Bundle of the two as well! Gotta love getting some awesome science in, especially in all this cold weather!

Ultimate Family Science Night

This is going to be one monster post! It has been in the works for many months. I wanted to hold a science night at my school for awhile and finally it is here! I created this product to get ready and it was a fantastic night. I'll back up a little bit to show you all the prep work involved and the different parts of the night.

First up - some EDITABLE fun promo slides! I have as .jpeg and then get to my person at school who puts them up on TVs and on our homepage.

We received the funding to provide food at our event but you can certainly edit that part out! These got the attention since most of our other slides are rather plain :(
I put those up a month - 6 wks before.

Invitiation: Both versions are editable with your school information! Once again, they were eyecatching and great attention grabbers! I included an RSVP because we needed a count for food at our event but you certainly don't have to use it if you don't want to.

I wanted to stress how fun it would be for the WHOLE FAMILY! What a great way to interact and get a night away from home :)

The setup: 8 stations with 2 demos.  I only did 6 stations because with the amount of people 8 would have been too many to keep track of.  Each station comes with instruction sheet, QR code for explanation, extra questions sheet to discuss with parents, and a worksheet to complete if you wanted. Here is an example of what is included for each station!

I got all the stations ready each in their own tub beforehand to make sure everything is in order.  Good thing I have some helpers that will be there! printed out directions on each page then the questions to discuss on the back with the tub.  All supplies are in the tub ready to go!

After the tubs were ready to go this is how I start:

  • 1st demo - flaming money. I model how to follow directions then use the QR code to learn about how the science works then talk about the questions with your parents.
  • Spread out between the different stations and keep a timer.  For our schedule it worked out to be about 8-10 minutes.  6 stations + 1 demo before and after + transitions about 1 1/2 hours.
  • 2nd demo - elephant toothpaste - talk about what we learned and what we can take away.
Here are some pictures from the night! It went great even with the HUGE crazy turnout! I loved seeing the parents get involved and seeing the looks on the student's faces!

Elephant Toothpaste - always a hit!

Magic Mixing Milk!
Learning about Surface tension!

Static Electricity Station - racing cans! Picking up salt, pepper, cinnamon, rice Krispies!

Glow flubber- look at the cute hubby there, he filled in when my high school helpers left - gotta love him!

M&Ms and Skittles

Pepper Scatter

 Flaming Money!

More Static Electricity

Marshmallow Shooters -definitely a favorite of the night!

I had a fantastic time! The event was well organized and went off great.  Remember to download the updated file with new goodies!

On the Bandwagon

So I wanted to keep you updated on what I've been working on as of late. Yes there have been projects! I will post more classroom pictures SOON! I have some ready but wanted do to a big post rather than just a few.  I also will post about Science Night that I planned for our school it was CRAZY and awesome! Just waiting to get some pictures edited - there will be a ton!

Otherwise if you teach kindergarten you are in luck, I have been working on some great packs! The first is a Printable Pack (all the rage!) but for the WHOLE YEAR!

This pack is jam packed with 70 pages of awesome CCSS goodness.  The pages have the code at the top and are ready to print and go with your kiddos!

It's great to show kindergarten mastery and assess skills as well as a first grade review! So versatile! Go download the preview for some sample pages!

I almost forgot - the pack has no general theme so it can be used all year!

Second, if you love 10 frames in your class - you will love this!

We have been playing games all year but I wanted to add a little more flair and put all the games together so for next year I'll be a tad more organized.  These games are fantastic for those young learners starting out and great for independent centers!

Here are some previews of the 10 games involved! They are all kindergarten concepts but could be used for review in first.  Many include differentiated recording sheets depending on the needs of your students.

Hope you check these out! What have you been learning lately? Look for pictures coming soon!
