Book Creator App...even in Kindergarten

So I was trying to come up with cool ways to use our Ipads in Kindergarten.  I found the Book Creator App (FREE) and was really excited by how it turned out!  I have to admit I was skeptical about what kindergarteners could do, but I was impressed.  We worked on many writing skills, typing, letter recognition, and technology to create our book!  We used the book creator app to write about ourselves using sight words and it couldn't be easier- even for kindergarten and one Ipad!

I'll walk you through the steps of our book:

1. I created a cover page using the top + and "i" signs you can add content or change the color and size of the page and words.  It really couldn't be easier!
As you can see you can add photos you already have or use the camera -which is what we did so we could get a picture of ourselves.  Here is also where you would add text using the "T"

Next, each student created a page - with 1 ipad it was slower but we talked about taking turns.  They used the camera feature to take a picture of themselves.  For our book, we first included our names, then some sight word sentences!  We know the words "I, am, like" so they each did 1 "I am" sentence usually their age and one thing they liked.

I have some word rings that helped them spell words or they worked with me to sound it out. Then they could change the colors if they wanted.

Here is my page: Ignore my extremely crazy look in the picture - I did it before school started (it was still dark :(

On the pages tab you can reorder the pages any way you would like which is definitely handy.

One of my favorite parts of the app is after you finish a book, you have numerous ways you can read it.

Clicking the arrow icon on the top right shows you, you can open it in iBooks - what a fun way for students to read it to themselves and learn about classmates while reading sight words!  It is easy to find and fun for them to read about people they know!

Another option for the book is exporting! You can export it as email or other various things by clicking the same icon when you are looking at your complete books.  It is normally sent as a .pub document and can be opened by other Apple devices but it also gives you the option to export as a pdf which can be printed.  I will also keep a copy in my room for students to read.

I will add our class picture to the front as well!  This is excellent also for students to learn about keyboarding.  We need that for our computer time so getting familiar with the layout now is also helpful.  For beginning kindergarten, even letter recognition is important when they have to find the letter that matches how to spell the sight word!

I think it worked on many great skills and I can't wait to begin another book.  I'm thinking some type of research project...any great ideas for Kindergarten? What else have you done in Book Creator?

Fall Happenings.

We've been working on our pumpkin directional books - getting ready for that season! First, we started by drawing pumpkins so we would be able to put them on each page.  We practiced reading the pages together and drew the pumpkin where he was suppose to go and used the correct colors - can you say cross curricular instruction!

You can pick up your copy here.

We've also been doing great on our shapes! We did shape hunts around the room along with shape monsters of course!  I got a FREE Shape Monster activity from Kindergarten Smorgasboard here!  It was great and my students loved it!
If you're looking for a great shape activity I just put up some 2-D and 3-D shape hunts and sorts!

We have conferences coming up in a few weeks and I've been working on some ideas and I can't wait to share them.  It can be a stressful time but I'm really looking forward to sharing all the positives with my parents as well.

Halloween Sight Word Reader

If your are anything like me and knee deep learning new sight words then I have a great FREEBIE for you!  I created this based on the words we learn at the very beginning of the year so it is a great easy read for my students come Halloween time!!

It focuses on the sight words : the, I, see, a!  The additional words all correspond to the picture and they are in a traceable font so the students can quickly identify and learn to spell them if they wish to use them in future writing.

Be sure to leave feedback if you want to see more FREE readers for the upcoming holidays/seasons!

I also have another Halloween Reader using Directional and color words - seriously an awesome combination!!!!  It ties in so many skills for my kinders! Check it out by clicking the link below!
The basis of the book is directional words, so you draw a pumpkin where it is directed on each page but you all incorporate color words for each page and recognizing them as well!

Fire Safety and Picture Dump

Along with the all the other elementary teachers out there, I have been teaching fire safety this week.  We started off with the brain pop video and talked about what we could do at home and school followed by practicing for a fire drill.

I wish you could see them better, but they did awesome! Definitely a great listening exercise for Kindergarten, we will do more guided drawing!

I found this awesome guided drawing fire truck here!  Which we did all together.  We don't get art till next semester so this is something my kindergarteners loved and were very proud of!  It even made my drawing look good!  Do you do guided drawing???? I really want to do it more!!!!
We got to go to the fire station today and get a tour and ask questions.  Of course we had a lot of questions!  It was pretty fun and we all got fire hats to go with our outfits.  We used those to help us color later ;)

What have you been up to this fire safety week?

Also for anyone that uses Treasures series, I have some writing sight words and sentences pack that is awesome for small groups, or an independent center!

Perfect for sight words!

Also if anyone is working on Shapes now as well...we did our shape hunt! How much fun it was!

Found a circle! Good thing we have play food! :)

Sorting shapes before recess, we were tired from our shape hunt!

October Currently

I'm linking up with Farley again to see what I'm up to this month!

I absolutely love my class (maybe you always love them your first year?)  but we get off early 3 wednesdays this month and Kindergarten only goes M/W/F until December (we're weird) so I feel like we're missing a lot of teaching time!

That being said, with starting reading groups I need some more small group work besides books to do with kindergarten that focus on letters, sounds, etc...

If you have seen my Instagram you may know that I'm on a slight painting kick and am in definite need of more canvas!!

Don't forget to enter the teacher shirt giveaway either since today is the last day!!!
